APA Florida is a professional membership organization for approximately 3,000 Florida urban planners and is a component of the American Planning Association. APA Florida seeks an Executive Director to provide day-to-day oversight and implementation of APA Florida’s mission and operating plan. The work is carried out in partnership with an actively engaged 26-member volunteer board.
Provide support to the President, the Executive Committee, all other Committees, and to the membership;
Oversee the organization’s financial management;
Provide logistical and contractual support for our Annual Conference and Public Policy Workshop;
Solicit event sponsors and coordinate benefits;
Support the development and implementation of organization’s strategic plan;
Work with our lobbyist (consultant) to advocate on behalf of APA Florida’s legislative platform and priorities;
Provide technical support to the leaders of the Chapter’s 12 geographic Sections;
Coordinate Chapter activities with National APA governance procedures and financial responsibilities;
Supervise APA Florida staff which include a bookkeeper/administrative assistant, a communications manager, and at times a student intern.
Carry out other duties as assigned by the President or Executive Committee or as specified in the Executive Director’s contract or employment agreement; and
The ideal candidate will demonstrate increasingly advanced experience in management positions within the public, non-profit or private sector. More specifically:
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and fiscal management skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Experience with virtual and in-person meeting logistics
In-depth knowledge of financial reporting, analysis, and forecasting, including budget creation and oversight
Strong knowledge of the Florida legislative process and lobbying practices
Experience hiring and supervising staff and guiding their professional development
Fundraising and donor development experience
Experience working with boards of directors and an understanding of board governance
Requirements: The position is office-based with some remote work opportunities. A Bachelor’s degree is required, and preference will be given to candidates with education or experience in urban and regional planning, a related field, or association management. Legislative and/or event planning experience is a plus. Some travel is required.
Compensation: The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $120,000 per year. Actual salary will be commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, retirement fund, and paid time off.
