The Director of Public Affairs, working under the direction of the Senior Vice President, is responsible for identifying opportunities, developing strategy, and managing the implementation of public-facing programs and strategies to build, protect and enhance the medtech industry's reputation and that of AdvaMed as the leading global medtech trade organization. The Director must be able to think strategically and broadly across all types of communications internal, external, across all audiences and stakeholders. The Director will help supervise and manage our outside public relations firms and consultants as well as work directly with member companies public affairs / communications counterparts to help execute the departments overall strategy.
Essential Duties of Position
Works with the Senior Vice President for Public Affairs to create and implement an integrated and effective public affairs strategy
Creates and assists in the development of strategic, multifaceted communications programs to advance the industry's positions with key stakeholders
Manages the Associations strategic projects in collaboration with internal stakeholders to constantly expand upon and improve effectiveness of the Associations presence.
Directs the departments social media efforts to effectively inform and engage stakeholders and relevant influencers; ensures that social media activities are integrated into overall communications strategy and activities
Provides counsel to senior executives, staff, and member companies on public affairs, social media presence, and works to position AdvaMed senior staff as experts using relevant media platforms and digital channels
Produces and manages digital media content including graphics, animations, videos, audio/podcasts and infographics, and optimizes media files to enhance user experience and brand
Responsible for AdvaMed's social media platforms and increasing the Associations digital reach, ensuring content is accurate and consistent with the organization's priorities
Capable of drafting press releases, op-eds, feature articles, and other materials for various AdvaMed departments and programs
Collaborates with traditional publishing platforms to plan and manage the process that supports marketing, communications, data analytics, digital communications, journals/magazines, media and public relations, and partnership development and management
Works closely with the other staff to generate new forms of content and closely partners with IT, Events, Membership and Business Development teams on marketing and communications initiatives that create new value for members
Provides guidance on digital advertising strategy and paid media campaigns to increase efficiency and effectiveness of communications objectives inside and outside the beltway with key audiences
Leads international digital communications efforts in collaboration with global department and other internal stakeholders and outside vendors.
Provide strategic oversight on build-out of digital properties to accommodate international PR campaigns and communications strategies
Supervises and manages relationships with multiple vendors, serves as primary contact for web development vendor, and manages projects/time in accordance with budget
Travel Requirements: 10%
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience leading digital and social media projects is required
Candidates must have a track record of excellent professional writing, communication, and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects under high-stress deadlines
Experience in developing and implementing media relations plans and proven ability in placing media stories and managing relationships with national/international contacts.
Experience and comfort speaking/presenting clearly and confidently in front of large groups and C-suite leadership, CEOs
Experience in health care and/or a regulated and global environment is preferred but not required.
Excellent written and verbal skills
Direct knowledge of public affairs strategies and tactics
Understanding of the legislative and regulatory processes a plus
Ability to translate complex policy issues into well-written material for broad public consumption
Strong knowledge of and experience with writing, editing, and proofing
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others
Data, analytics, and metrics oriented
Experience with online monitoring and measurement platforms including but not limited to Omniture, Facebook Insights, YouTube Insights, Google Analytics, HootSuite, TweetDeck, and Social Mention.
Experience using: Wordpress and/or Drupal content management systems, understanding of HTML and CSS along with Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) are a plus but not required
Minimum Experience Required: 6+ years experience in public affairs with extensive experience in and knowledge of digital media, including social media channels; medical device or other healthcare-related experience preferred. PR agency experience or experience dealing with PR agencies strongly preferred
