The Director of Membership is part of the leadership team of the New Jersey State Bar Association, the state’s leading organization of judges, attorneys and other professionals. They are responsible for the development and execution of both membership recruitment and retention strategies.
Successful candidates will have a documented record of success running membership development programs, demonstrating creativity, and will possess the ability to work with data to identify and react to industry trends. In addition, candidates must be highly organized, have superb interpersonal skills, and be able to develop a clear and workable strategy to achieve the responsibilities of the position.
The primary job responsibility of the Director of Membership is to increase NJSBA membership, membership participation, overall membership engagement, and to meet or exceed revenue objectives through consistent use of member segmentation, thoughtful and useful member benefit programs, and targeted messaging strategies, among other tools. The Director of Membership will use both creativity and innovation to develop new membership campaign concepts, copy, and special offers based on analysis of marketing, sales and competitive data. Similar innovation will be applied to the retention and renewal efforts for existing members.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Working collaboratively with Association leaders and other staff members, develop and follow a measurable strategic plan to recruit new members and retain current members.
Manage membership team including three direct reports and three indirect reports.
Serve as part of the NJSBA leadership team and collaborate with other staff to create programs and initiatives that leverage assets and facilitate communication between all aspects of membership.
Regularly review membership structure, value proposition and pricing to maximize member benefits, membership growth and revenue - from first contact throughout their membership journey.
Develop, promote and direct programs and services, which enhance and enable growth and engagement in students and individuals that are new to the practice of law.
Develop and meet or exceed annual membership budget targets and monthly and quarterly forecasts.
Run, analyze, and act on routine and special reporting including regular KPI reports and monthly reports for the Board of Trustees.
Work with Communications and Marketing Departments to write, design and implement effective recruitment and retention strategies, develop direct communications with members and leaders and manage print and online content.
Develop and manage affinity and other programs with third-party vendors to maximize member benefits and revenue.
Conduct regular research as needed to identify needs, opportunities, trends, and member demographics, etc.
Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
Successful Candidates Must Have:
A minimum of five years of association membership or comparable experience.
A minimum of five years of staff management experience.
A proven track record of leading a service-oriented team working with members, volunteer leaders, committees and/or clients.
Strategic and creative thinking skills combined with project management ability and demonstrated leadership.
Customer Relationship Management (CRM)/AMS database experience, preferably Personify, iMIS, Salesforce or similar, including but not limited to analyzing reports related to member activity.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excellent persuasive communication skills.
Genuine team enthusiasm and positive energy.
A collaborative, can-do approach to problem solving, and the ability to meet deadlines and efficiently manage projects.
Experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
